How the paycheck estimate works
Start with hourly pay, an annual salary, or a gross paycheck. See federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, state income tax, and entered deductions before the take-home amount. Compare the same check with extra gross earnings to see the estimated increase.
Biweekly and twice-monthly pay
Biweekly pay normally uses 26 checks per year. Twice-monthly pay uses 24. That difference changes both gross installments and withholding per check. For hourly biweekly pay, enter the two workweeks separately.
Is this an overtime tax calculator?
Yes, the extra-pay section compares estimated withholding and take-home pay with and without your entered overtime earnings. It uses regular-paycheck annualization, not a separate flat overtime tax. It does not decide legal overtime eligibility or calculate every state’s gross overtime rules.
Does “no tax on overtime” make overtime tax-free?
No. The qualified federal deduction concerns eligible overtime premium compensation, subject to limits. Overtime remains generally subject to Social Security and Medicare. We apply your W-4 settings rather than automatically making all overtime tax-free. See IRS Publication 15-T.
How close is this to my actual check?
The federal calculation follows the 2026 IRS regular-paycheck percentage method for the supported filing statuses. The state bracket model is a dated planning baseline with state-specific limits. For a closer match, enter current state withholding, local taxes, insurance contributions, and your W-4 settings. See all assumptions and sources.
